The Terra Wins The Welterweight Title

This past Saturday the UFC featured its 69th fight card which was headlined by George "Rush" St. Pierre vs. Matt "The Terra" Serra. The match was a welterweight championship match with challenger Matt Serra taking on the much favored GSP in Houston, TX for the first time ever.

As both fighters entered the cage, a look of excitement was on their faces. With GSP's patented water spit before he entered, the much taller and lengthlier GSP seemed to be a shoe-in to retain his title. As both men approached the center of the cage it was even more visible the size and reach advantage that the 5'10" Quebec native had over the 5'6'' Long Islander. Unphased, Matt Serra looked calm, as though he was unware he was even fighting for the belt.

In the opening seconds of the match it was quick to see that Serra was willing to press the fight and not let GSP dictate the stand up game. Both fighters threw back and forth, exchanging slightly but not connecting fully. It was a typical opening minute of a championship fight. To much surpise, GSP was caught with a left that skimmed the top of his head. George then stepped back in what appeared to be a slip. Quickly regaining his feet, he stood back up, this time to eat a punch that fully connected. George being the warrior and champion he is once again rushed back to his feet. Taking more shots, he shot for a single leg takedown but was unable to follow through when Matt Serra pulled out and connected with yet another shot. This time GSP went to his back and was unable to stand back up as Serra ground and pounded his way into victory.

With a first round TKO over the expected victor George St. Pierre, Matt Serra had shocked the world as he stated he would previous to the fight. GSP being the upstanding fighter he is, gave props and let Matt Serra know he congratulates him on his victor but looks forward to a rematch.

Matt Serra is rumored to be defending the belt first against the former Welter Weight Champion Matt Hughes, who appeared to be happy with the upset victory over George "Rush'" St. Pierre.
